I came across something the board might find interesting. In an old textbook about how to be a sports writer, Lou Gefland published a letter from 1940 written by Arthur Daley, the longtime columnist at the New York Times. He was the NYT sports columnist from 1942 to 1974. This letter was written before he took over for John Kieran, who is referenced in it as well.
