I did a search on google news, and the stories from AP all said "crosshairs."

The big thing about AP is that it doesn't follow it's own style.

I'm not saying two words is right, just that it's not in the stylebook. When it's not there, you refer to the above-mentioned dictionary, where it's listed as two.
