Got word on my feed last night but the obit just now dropped.
Obituary for James Brian O'Hara at South Chapel
Not everybody in North Georgia journalism worked with the big Irishman, but it damn sure felt like they all knew him. Even after bailing on the Rome News-Tribune in 2008, he stayed active as an SID for Shorter College and official scorer at the Rome Braves games.
A few months into my time at the RN-T (a very few months) I moved over to the sports desk after a star-crossed run doing news pages. I barely had time to move desks before he announced he was going on a way overdue vacation and I was running the section for two weeks. I'm sure it had way more to do with him wanting a getaway than knowing whether I'd be any good, but he always had that sense of who to put where and that things would work out better than I could see. I went from anonymous to fully part of the crew in a hurry, at a time when it felt like I'd made a huge mistake moving from across the state. And I few months after that when I decided I wanted to transition out of newspapers and go back to college, he kept me on doing pages a couple of nights a week so I could make tuition and baby would have shoes.
A damn good man to his rest.
