Longtime Dem-Gaz sportswriter Pete Perkins died April 4.
My favorite story involving Pete happened when I was SID at Little Rock (which was then UALR). We were playing at UMash, and the game started and Pete's chair on press row was empty. At halftime, when he still wasn't there, I called the sports desk back home to check if everything was OK. Turns out Pete had never been to Boston, so he flew into Logan - instead of an airport closer to the arena - so he would be able to spend some time in the city the day after the game. He underestimated how long it would take to get from the airport to UMash, or underestimated the traffic or both, but he got there just as the second half got started.
