Sports Writing Intern

Private Preps is a publication covering Chicago-area private schools. We launched in November of 2018. Our primary focus has been telling the stories of student-athletes through human-interest narratives, along with providing game coverage. In addition, PPP coverage includes season previews, game previews, notebooks, beat books, breaking news and season recaps. We have become a credible source for Notre Dame College Prep, St. Patrick, St. Ignatius and Resurrection.

- Objective:

We are looking for an eager sports writing intern that will be tasked with attending assigned high school sporting events. The student will get hands-on experience as a sportswriter. This a position that will require work from the road and home. A minimum of two stories per week is mandatory.

This position is a three-month commitment that is unpaid. We offer college credit, but it's not necessary. Intern will report directly to Hunter Tickel, founder of Private Preps.

Please apply if you think this opportunity is for you. Required with this application are three published writing samples, a cover letter outlining what sets you apart from the competition and a resume.

Email applications to huntertickel@gmail.com, due to a high volume of applications we can't reply to all.

- Expectations:

  • File a minimum of two stories per week

  • Eagerness for journalism experience while working toward a degree (college credit is an option, not required)

  • Ability to drive to games throughout Chicagoland

  • Punctual getting to events

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize duties

  • Building rapport with coaches and student-athletes

  • Attention to detail, getting facts straight before submitting to editor

  • Research of both teams for gamers, prior to attending

  • Well-versed in punctuation and grammar

  • Understanding of social media

Application:

  • Three published writing samples

  • Cover letter

  • Resume

Start date: Aug. 1, 2020

Length: 3 months, unpaid

Deadline for application: June 2, 2020

Schools use a publication as a source? How does that work?

If being "well versed in punctuation and grammar" is a requirement, I suggest re-writing this sentence to ensure that subject and verb agree:

@cjericho We have been an independent publication for these schools for 20 months. The only relationship we have with the schools is our coverage we provide. Advertisers is how we are funded. Thanks
