Would it be acceptable to flash a middle finger at Pence if you happen to cross his path on the street? Because you "disagree" with him? Spit in his direction? Curse him?

At what point does just being polite and respectful --- something we were all raised to do --- take precedence?

This is completely different. It's a political statement. This administration is doing things to hurt immigrants and people who want health care. Being polite doesn't get the job done.
