Reilly Smith to the Rangers for draft picks and 25 percent of his salary retained by Pittsburgh.

It's only $3.75 million (I was having a heart attack because everyone was reporting it for more than a half hour without the salary retention) and it only puts them on the hook for one year. At the same time, he's not a 1RW, and by the time they actually put some stability there, Zibanejad and Kreider are going to be in their 40s.

Cap is going up, but on most deals the term is too much. The best way to win the free agency is by not playing.

In a bit of a news dump, the league announced the reinstatement of Stan Bowman, Joel Quenneville and Al MacIsaac.

And Bowman going to the old boy network heaven in Edmonton, likely. Those media dinosaurs will fawn all over him.

God that’s an overpay, but that’s July 1st for almost every team.

    Probably.

We've been clamoring for a new team around Ovechkin, and the McClellan has certainly obliged. I think we've seen the last of Oshie, who may not officially retire but will be on LTIR next season, along with Backstrom. Ovechkin, Wilson, Carlson are all that's left from the 2018 Cup winner, and I'm good with that. Time for some fresh blood. I also like the two-year show-me deal they gave McMichael, who took a big step last season.

EDM has been the league's PeePaw's Team for a while. This doesn't help.

If you ever doubt the old boys network. John Shannon is the epitome of it.

I have never cared to listen to Shannon and agree with you about him, but who is the guy yelling at him? And why is he yelling in the first place? Why does he care that much?

I saw Geekie this week at Lightning developmental camp and that organization hasn't had a prospect that looks like that in a long time. I don't know if the Lightning will be a better team in 2024-25, but Jon Cooper will be much happier with their potential to play defense.

That's Matt Sekeres of the Sekeres and Price podcast. Their show on TSN radio in Vancouver got cut several years ago when the station went all canned comedy or something. Podcast soon was launched.

Sekeres' ire is about how Colin Campbell leveraged his office in the NHL to benefit his son Gregory while his son was active in the NHL (something about watering down discipline or something). Kind of traces to the 2011 Stanley Cup (Campbell's Bruins vs. the Canucks). I wouldn't say Sekeres roots for the Canucks (except for how a successful team helps ratings), but he will stand up for what he thinks is right.

No, I'm not Matt Sekeres. Or Blake Price.

It’s also all out there. This isn’t fanboy stuff. The emails are there for people to read.
