Couldn't find a previous thread on this (apologies if there was one). Seeing it's state tournament time for many of us, let's send a shout-out to some great school nicknames we've seen in our states.

Here's five from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, land of the pasty, cheap beer and great team nicknames:

    1. Ishpeming Hematites
    2. Gwinn Modeltowners
    3. Manistique Emeralds
    4. Kingsford Flivvers
    5. (of course) Watersmeet Nimrods

I'm sure there are more out there ...

    Woonsocket Villa Novans
East Providence Townies (my alma mater - in reference to the now-city once being the largest town in the country).
Every other high school is Lions, Tigers, Patriots, etc.

Another good Illinois one: Plano Reapers

And it always disappointed me that the town of Sandwich, Ill., couldn't do better than Indians for its nickname. C'mon ... the heros? The Hoaggies? The Ruebens?

    Georgia:

    Cairo (pronounced CAY-ro) Syrupmakers
Johnson of Savannah Atomsmashers (it's located near the Savannah River nuclear bomb plant)

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I can come up with off the top of my head.

I'll break the thread requirement somewhat, and I always do this on these threads, but I love the Gulf South Conference nicknames. If I have to contain them to Arkansas, I can do this:

    Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (Cotton Blossoms)
Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (Golden Suns)
    Henderson State Reddies
    Southern Arkansas Muleriders

That omits a couple of other good ones:

Delta State Statesmen (unofficial nickname: The Fighting Okra)
    West Florida Argonauts
