So much for having it drift down and recovering it mostly intact.

That not only deflated the balloon, but it separated the payload from it. Going to be mostly pieces.

But, they probably learned a lot from ELINT over the past several days.

Imagine if this had been flying over Arizona on Super Bowl Sunday.

 

Perhaps they didn't want to capture it intact.

Something I've failed to see mentioned is the balloon spent quite a bit of time/miles over western Canada. Why isn't anyone screaming about that. The Canadians could have shot it down just as easily as us.

 

As Mr. Gee points out, the Chinese "spy" balloon is our national Rorschach blot.
