"Diagnosis" in "quotation marks" because "you" and "I" and both "incompetent" to make an "actual diagnosis," therefore any "diagnosis" we might make would be only rhetorical.

Nonetheless, regardless of the shooter's condition of mental acuity, he needs to be removed from existence.

I think the NRA does share the blame.

They do everything in their power to make certain that nutjobs off the street have no trouble getting their hands on assault rifles. They also indoctrinate their believers to shriek down any attempt to reconsider whether that's really good policy.

The NYT with more on the reports that Holmes was dressed as a movie character: "New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the suspect in the shootings had red-painted hair that resembled the character 'The Joker' from the Batman comics and movies."

And we throw every member of the NRA under the bus as if we don't have the ability to choose how to act responsibly with the right to bear arms.

Nut jobs can and would get the guns or another destructive device no matter what. There's bomb recipes on the internet.

And as far as "mental toughness" kids aren't taught to deal with adversity or failure. We dumb down education and other standards to keep kids from "failing." Do I think there's a direct tie between this and the killer? No but just hearing about the "dropout of medical school" aspect led me to wonder what caused that.
