Well it seems like he tried to blow up police by sending them to his place, which, while it wouldn't be directly from The Dark Knight, would have some similarities, especially if he got caught on purpose just to do that.

Given the booby traps in his apartment, his mother's lack of surprise and his relatively young age, I would not be surprised at all to hear that he had a recent schizophrenic break, probably paranoid type. It would also account for dropping out of school.

He is in the prime age range and demographic for it. And it can turn previously intellegent people into someone with absolutely no touch with reality.

I've got no basis for that other than the circumstances described, but I would think it's certainly a possiblity.

I've met and spoken with this woman, a pediatrician who lost touch with reality and stabbed her two sons, killing one, then calmly called 911 to report her crime:

I haven't read this entire thread, so this may have been addressed, and I know I'm vastly missing the plot here, but I read that a 4-month-old baby was among the wounded?

Who takes a 4-month-old to a midnight movie?*
