All of Nash's really consequential work -- including that for which he won the "Nobel Prize" -- was done well before his mental illness set in.

Wouldn't surprise me to find that this fellow wasn't dropping out of the graduate school so much as that he was being shown the door. Happens a lot. And it certainly makes for some interesting oral comprehensive examinations for under-performing doctoral students. You start wishing you had that carry-and-conceal permit. We had one just last year go off the deep end and ultimately get locked away until she could be "safely" deported. And she didn't even flunk ... she just thought she was going to.

I'm not saying I would do this, but I don't have a problem with it because I don't know the details of why.
As long as the child was wearing ear protection (movies can get pretty loud) it wouldn't be hard to bring a 4-month old in because chances are they're out for the night at that point. I've been lucky and had a child who sleeps through the night. Noise hasn't mattered much.
The parents could have prepurchased tickets, gone to drop the baby off at a sitter and the mom freaked about leaving the child overnight.
The 6-year old is a bigger deal for me, but I'm guessing the kid is probably sleeping through the movie anyway.

Few more details from some people who knew maybe talked to the guy a few times years ago:

Smart and quiet is the assessment, but it doesn't seem like these people talked to him recently. When Loughner was being described early on everybody knew he was nuts. So far, I haven't seen anyone describe Holmes in that manner.

    This could be telling:

The media needs to do here what they did with the Virginia Tech shooting.
Show his picture as little as possible.
I don't remember the name of the Virginia Tech shooter.
    Do you?
Hopefully in five years this f@@kwad will see his wish didn't come true and most of us will have forgotten his name.
And he will just be sitting in that rubber room all alone with nothing but the ghosts of the people he killed to haunt him.

AMC Banning Moviegoers In Costume As Security Beefs Up Nationwide

AMC Theatres said it is reinforcing its security procedures in the wake of today’s shooting in Colorado. The company will not all any guests into theaters “in costumes that make other guests feel uncomfortable and we will not permit face-covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings”. Said the chain: “We’re reinforcing our security procedures with our theatre teams, which we cannot discuss in detail for obvious, safety reasons. Local law enforcement agencies, our landlords and their and our local security teams are stepping up nationwide to ensure we provide the safest environment possible for our guests. We couldn’t be more grateful for their collective support.” AMC said it is not amending any screening schedule for The Dark Knight Rises but it will exchange or refund tickets for the Warner Bros movie.
