Saw Newt Gingrich on CNN saying that the shooter didn't use an assault weapon because "assault weapons are illegal." Newt tried to make the point that if we make an example of this guy with a swift trial and conviction, it will set an example and keep others from doing similar mass shootings.

Really. Really, he said that. And he wanted to be president. Jeesh.

Can't wait for 2014, when Will McAvoy will caution that we shouldn't rush to judgment on the identity of the Aurora shooter. Better yet, he can come on TV on the night of July 19, 2012 and warn Colorado authorities of the dangers of screening the Batman movie at midnight.

The current player (David Anderson) did have scratches on his faces from debris.
I didn't initially have it, but added it after I confirmed a tip: a CSU basketball recruit was also there. He was unharmed.

This definitely ruined my night after getting out of the theater around 3:15 a.m.

Great blog post by Adrian Dater about Redfield. Sorry if it was already linked:

Most 4-month-olds are NOT going to sleep through the night ... especially not in a theater with a bunch of explosions (in the movie) and shit.

Is it that hard to wait until a matinee? Is that hard, if you're a parent, to just not go at all?

He's technically correct. But he's splitting hairs between an assault rifle (full auto) and an assault-style rifle (semi auto).

A true background check for weapons purchases will never happen. Some practical reasons are 1) sheer amount of political lobbying by groups such as the NRA or other privacy groups to keep it from happening, and 2) the sheer amount of cost to create a nation-wide database to monitor who is purchasing what, plus plug every retailer into it, plus train every employee how to properly use it.

What a train-wreck that will be to get through the houses of Congress. Good luck.

From some news reports, the suspect never had more than a traffic ticket. So, how was any sporting goods store clerk to know to not sell to the guy? He had no record.

So, if I want to buy a gun and some tactical gear to take a pistol safety course, I should be arrested? I haven't committed a crime. You can't detain someone just because you think they might commit a crime. Even sticking someone with a felony conspiracy charge is difficult on the circumstantial evidence that "he bought a lot of guns." Lots of people buy guns, can't arrest them all just to make sure they're good people.

Yes, there's a lot of outrage right now and a lot of hyperbole thrown around after one of these things. Then reality sets in. You can't keep tossing away civil liberties to protect people. Because the government will never be able to protect people from what MIGHT happen. People will always find weapons if they want them. Big Brother can't protect us 24/7. We have to be as vigilant as we can and look out for ourselves. Sometimes, shit happens.

Age of the kids was brought up much earlier in the day and somebody defended the practice. As a parent of 2 young kids (pre-elementary age) DCF should be sent to your house for taking a toddler to a midnight showing of anything, I don't care if it's the fucking Wonder Pets.

I'm not saying the parents are in any way deserving of the tragedy. But give me a fucking break.

I wouldn't go that far, but I wouldn't take an infant to a movie of any sort.
