Require gun shop owners to enter a drivers license number or an ID number into a website, app, whatever that will do the check in seconds.

The cost to create and tun this database would probably be less than the dollars spent cleaning up this mess in Colorado.

The technology is there. Hell, I can download an app that tells me every sex offender in America and where they live quicker than most commercial breaks. It will even show me on a map.

He underwent national background checks for every gun purchase he made.

2nd Amendment arguments can be a lot of fun. Are they necessary within hours of a tragedy?

Is it more appropriate for a separate thread?

Somehow, it seems out of place to debate it here.

For another day. Too much politics about it. And certainly not here on this thread. This isn't a day to politicize anything. It's a day to mourn. To offer love and support and comfort. To be there for friends, family and community. The politicizing will come later. Just not today. Or even within the next week.

Gun shop owners already have to do a check through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

The buyer has to fill out a form that includes questions about mental state, prior convictions/arrests for domestic abuse and other topics. There also is a question about whether the prospective buyer is a U.S. Citizen. The questions include driver's license number, social security number, home address and other means of identification.

    http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/nics

It doesn't take but a few minutes to fill out. If there is a significant problem with the purchaser the FBI denies the application and the seller is supposed to decline the sale. If they proceed with an illegal sale after a "deny" then the store owner is in violation of multiple laws. The application also may be delayed if the FBI wants to follow up on the provided information but does not automatically deny the application. This delay could be a day or several days, and ultimately may be denied or approved.

This has been in effect since 1998.

I've often gone to midnight shows and I can never get over how many people I see bringing their really young kids, babies, toddlers, etc. Are there a whole bunch of people who would be delighted to look after their kids for a surprisingly small amount of money?

I'm less interested in whether stricter gun laws would prevent these than I am in whether not sensationalizing the news coverage would slow them down.

Mile High, I got a call from a buddy in Fort Collins and he said the story making the rounds up there is that there may have been an inside accomplice, who contacted the shooter at the appropriate time, then propped open the door for him before slipping out. Anything to that?

Serious, somber question: Do we know for sure that Jessica Redfield wasn't a member here? Strikes me as entirely possible that she was.

Very much dismissed as out of hand and a nonstarter. One of the many rumors that have spread today.

    From that link...

NICS is located at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia. It provides full service to FFLs in 30 states, five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia.

    What about the other 20?

I heard something today, don't ask me where, but a person received a call on a phone near the front then opened the door. But that is the type of detail that will get ironed out in the next 24-48 hours.
