    Background checks are ineffective for a few reasons. One is this event where Holmes wasn't in the system as someone with mental illness. Second, the gun show and private sale loophole makes it nearly impossible to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn't be able to buy them.

    If I lived in Utah, I could use KSL.com and buy a gun in 1-2 hours without any kind of background check.
