Got to give it up to Matt McQuinn. Dove on top of his girlfriend and was killed saving her. He was 27 and moved with his girlfriend recently to Colorado. Her brother also jumped on her but Matt was the only one killed. The girl was shot in the knee and the brother was not wounded.
What an act of selflessness and bravery.

Unlike the guy who left his girlfriend and kids in the theater and took off in his car.

Another hero in the Daily News, serviceman took a bullet for his gf. Jon Blunk was a victim in the Aurora shootings. His girlfriend Jansen Young was saved when Blunk threw himself on top of her in the hail of gunfire. [IMG]

Blunk’s girlfriend, Jansen Young, said he was fatally shot after pushing her under a seat to shield her. “Jon just took a bullet for me,” Young, 21, told the Today Show. “He knew and threw me on the ground, and was like, ‘We have to get down and stay down,’” she said. “Every gunshot, I was like, ‘This is it … I’m done for.’” Young said that Blunk had previously been in the military and was planning to enlist again. She said she tried to rouse him when the shooting was over, but he didn’t move. “He is the guy that would take a bullet for you. He did the right thing all the time,” she told Today. “I know I would not be here today if Jon had not been next to me in that movie theater.”

I've been front-and-center about 4-month-olds being at midnight movies. And I agree that a 6-year-old shouldn't be at a midnight or R-movie either.

But I don't take it so far to point the finger at the parent and say, "what were you thinking?" I just mean it as a benign observation.

No matter the judgement or lack thereof exercised, no one deserved what happened to them in that theater. I'm pretty certain the parent (presuming they survive) will be pouring salt in their own wounds forever. They don't need people like me to do it for them.

We took a newborn to a few movies back in the day. They all started before noon and had been out for a few weeks so we could all but guarantee a relatively empty theater in the event of a meltdown (never happened).

I think taking a kid under 10 to a midnight showing of anything is pretty stupid, much less a midnight showing where it's going to be very, very loud...

That said, the parents are guilty of questionable/bad judgment and nothing more. They have to live with their decision for the rest of their lives...

Agreed. No way in hell a 6-year-old should be at a midnight showing of that movie, but I certainly don't blame the parents for what happened to that child. I blame the asshole with the gun.

You know, I was expecting the conspiracy theorists to cook something up over this. They haven't disappointed.

The theory floating around the looney bin of the Internet is this was all staged. The shooter was provided guns and gear and explosives. It was done in conjunction with the Tuscaloosa shooting, so Obama could sign a UN small arms treaty which will nullify the Second Amendment (it won't).

The more I read about this, the more I think it was just some psycho with a gun acting out a Joker fantasy from a comic.

I'm not a comic guy on any level, but apparently there is a comic out there not only where the Joker or some other villain (as previously pointed out) shot up a theater, but there is also one where he booby traps his hideout, just like this psycho did.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. I've already seen the first wingnut piece suggesting that the government staged the whole thing to justify taking everyone's guns away.

The piece called it "Operation Fast and Furious 2."
