I agree, under such pressure to survive, it's difficult to say what one would do. My question in all of this has been, if you're in a movie theater and someone throws tear gas and shoots up at the ceiling, why would you think its part of the movie? In that situation, you get low and scurry to the nearest exit.

Honestly? In this situation, until I see the bodies dropping, I think teenagers. Drunken stupidity is a lot more common than mass murder (and something you actually have to deal with every few weeks, at least depending on where you live...)

Has anyone had anything happen out of the ordinary at the movies? The power went out once when I was a kid, and when I was an adult, saw a guy videotaping the movie, but he was interrupted by his girlfriend rubbing his crotch.

No one would think some guy is coming in to shoot them. People were likely thinking prank at first and who knows how long it took them to realize what was going on. I wonder how long the movie ran before an employee shut it off.

I'm not sure I would ever recognize gunfire right off the bat in any situation just because I've never been around it, don't expect it, and wouldn't know what it was. The noise would startle me, much like a firework startles me.

When I was in my mid-20s my wife-to-be and I were in Munich watching some street performers. They (there were three of them, IIRC) had one of those gigantic boom boxes and were doing some dance routine. I was on edge because: A) I was in a foreign country; B) I'm not all the comfortable in big crowds anyway; and C) this wasn't too long after the Lockerbie bombing. Anyway, one of the performers made his way over to the boom box, pushed some button or another and then sprinted away. I got the eff out of there pronto, but my wife-to-be and everyone else just stood around and watched. Of course it turns out it was part of the show, but I was struck by how passive everyone else was.

Many times, stupidity or the lack of common sense, causes death and injury.

It's not the only gem out there, Azrael. Our local NBC station had a half-hour infomercial on Sunday from...<Drum Roll Please...>The NRA!! It ran right before the Sunday national nightly news, which, of course, would have led off with the Aurora shootings. I may be on the "B" band in this business, but I am thinking of complaining. I realize most master control functions are no longer on-site at stations, but, c'mon, local NBC, would it have been difficult to check to make sure this Pro-NRA ad was held off on being run until some time had passed....? Jesus F.!!

Suspect due in court at any moment. Cameras are allowed.

Amen to that, Starman. Execute it and get it out of here.

I totally get that. But since I can't change what everybody in the world wants (including myself. I promised myself I wouldn't follow this story too closely, and I've mostly succeeded, but I'm still on this thread), I think the media can self-censor a bit. It's for the same reasons you don't name certain crime victims or (on a much less important level) show video of people running out onto the field at sporting events.
