    The shooter booby-trapped his apartment with "a disturbing elaborate setup of explosives." It could be "days" in dealing with the sophistication of the trap to disarm it.

    A judge has to declare someone to be mentally ill or someone needs to be confined to an institution to be banned from buying a gun. Even Giffords' shooter could legally buy a gun.

    Any word on how he got the smoke bombs or the tear gas canisters? Are they easy to get in that area?

    The mom is in San Diego, which reminds me that it's 28 years on Wednesday since the horrible McDonald's shooting there. I was working at AP in New York that summer and couldn't stop reading the newswire that day. i don't have to look it up to remember the name: James Oliver Huberty. "I'm going to hunt humans."

    How many people's papers have a reporter checking with local police to see if they're concerned about copy-cat incidents?

    It depends on the state. In some states, like Virginia after Tech, you get institutionalized very quickly.

    How else you gonna localize the stoy?

    Though I think if someone in a dark outfit walked into a Dark Knight showing and waved a gun today, he'd probably have about a dozen holes him him.
