Just for info, I guess. I was in Tacoma for more than a month last year -- from June 6 to July 10. It rained one day.

It may be 69 in June, but being on the water in Seattle, I'm sure it feels more like 59.

Which is fine by me. I can live with wearing long sleeves.

Re the potential and highly-preliminary SportsJournalists.com gathering in Austin:

    1. The last Friday night before football season is an unofficial Texas state holiday among both the sportswriting community and the coaching community.

    2. It would probably be better-attended than the APSE Southwest Convention. (ZING!)

    3. I'd recommend a hotel closer to downtown (i.e. within crawling distance). The Holiday Inn Town Lake is nice, but it's a bit of a hoof to Sixth Street and the route passes through at least one dodgy neighborhood.

I'll be in San Antonio at that time, F_B, and I'll gladly join you for a couple 'o beers.

Check that. I won't hit San Antonio until late October.

I'm in, seeing as how I live there and all.

No one had to petition Moddy to move east to west. That's been the plan all along.
The Official Outing Organizing Committee (OOOC) appoints a host and then gets out of the way. Host is in charge. If host bails, well, hell.

Sportschick and Joe are co-hosts for Seattle '08. Dates are at their discretion.
2009 will be east. Boston/Philly/New York. Need a host I'd trust to step forward. I love NYC and go there at least twice a year. Not inclined to make it an outing place because of price.
2010 will be one step closer to the West. Cleveland? Detroit? Chicago? KC?
2011 will be one more step. Denver? That's my personal choice but I'd need a host with the most.
2012 will be back west, I'd like to go all the way south and do San Diego.

And one more time: Other outings, any time, any place, are encouraged. Get togethers are always good.

I think Boston is just as expensive. Though I guess we could stay out in the sticks and take the T into town.

All 3 are expensive. It's (duh) the Northeast.

Main part is finding a cheap hotel.

The other problem with Boston is, while I'd love an outing here, getting Sox tickets ... well, good luck. Unless someone has a hookup. Tickets would have to be ordered literally the first day single-sale tickets go on sale for any shot of getting a block together. The good thing? If an outing falls through, the rest can be scalped for a healthy profit.

You want to do it on a Friday night or a Saturday night? I can't remember when our tab comes out, but I will look into it and see if there is time that weekend for me to come to Austin. It is a great city and it would be good to have a couple of beers with the Texas crew.

Holiday Inn Town Lake is a 15 min. walk to 6th Street. Is the Rainey Street neighborhood (between Town Lake and Cesar Chavez) really dodgy these days? I lived on Red River just south of Cesar Chavez (in that one house on that block) during the early 1990s and never felt uncomfortable. If anything, I'd guess it'd be semi-gentrified just like everything on the once-scruffy I-35 corridor downtown.

I walked from the Holiday Inn Town Lake to the Congress Street bridge one time and took a short cut west and then north to Cesar Chavez. I don't remember the name of the street but it had a really iffy feel to it. Lots of old, small frame houses (well-maintained, mind you), but every yard had a high fence and there was more than one pit bull on a chain in the yard, I'll put it that way. I could practically feel the eyeballs on me.
