If I decide in the next week not go go through with the Alaska firefighting job, I'll be in Texas as promised. Plus, I may have a date for the weekend coming up from Tyler.

    :D

May I express my contrition for the "I wouldn't piss on Yawn if he were on fire" post. It served no purpose whatsoever. I, too, would rather discuss good times over BBQ and beer.

    Carry on...

My wife's already gonna kill me for trying to squeeze in Vegas, so I might as well try to make it to Texas for some meat. Also, I like the potential guest list here.

Inky, please book this around a local poker night, a big touney or something. I have a gut feeling you know the kinds of joints I like to play at.

I vote for early June or late July, it just works better for me. I also don't think we should try Cubs weekend because I have a feeling those tickets will sell out quickly.

WritingIrish - Shiner is also big in West Texas, at least it is now. It is on tap at a couple of places I haunt and I have only been to one bar that doesn't sell it. We left.

If the weekend is going to be centered around baseball, I'd think you'd want to stay in Arlington just because the Metroplex is so damn big and hard to navigate. But since I'd probably only go for one night, I don't count in the voting.

I absolutely cannot make the Astros series and the Cubs would be doubtful. Everything else works for me. I like the idea of the Angels series, but I suspect that SportsJournalists.commers with kids would want to spend that day with their kids. The Texas summer gets worse and worse until hitting its height of humid hell shortly before Labor Day, so the later in the summer the gathering, the hotter the weather will be. I vote for Tigers or Brewers.

If there's going to be a Rangers theme, it might be easier to keep festivities in Arlington. The Metroplex is huge; traffic isn't as bad as it is in some cities but it's still a pain to get around DFW. The down side to that is that Arlington is a horrible, ugly suburb with very little but strip malls as far as the eye can see. There's literally no public transport and I personally hate being in Arlington unless I'm at the Rangers game. I think it'd be a shame if people from outside the region came all the way to DFW and spent the whole time in Arlington.

A local SportsJournalists.commer would have to scope out the details, but I do know that there is shuttle service to Rangers games from various locations around the area. I'm presuming that they have shuttle service from Dallas and Fort Worth. Perhaps HQ should be set up near some place where there's a shuttle stop for the Ballpark.

I actually like Fort Worth as a location for festivities and lodging. Fort Worth is cheaper and these days I think it's less crime-ridden than Dallas. It's more Texan and friendlier. The downtown is pretty fun and the arts district is worthwhile. Admittedly, I'm biased...I've always preferred Fort Worth to Dallas.

What a coincidence. I've always preferred the S-T to the DMN.

I wish I could come, but I had to blow my vacation to Texas this year in favor of my younger brother's wedding. I am going to be so jealous.

I can't think of a better place. If only seconding this post made it so.

When I went to a game last summer, I went early and bought tickets to the Hall of Fame thingy they have at the Ballpark and it was really cool. For big baseball fans I would recommend it. Plus I think you get a discount on the price of admission with a ticket to that day's game.

"If Fort Worth is 'where the West begins,' then Dallas must be where the East peters out."
I've always heard that attributed to Will Rogers. Don't know if he really said it, but it sounds like him.

I'd like to point out the potentially interesting information that the Fort Worth Cats, 2006 Charmions of the (new, independent-league) American Association have the following homestands that coincide with the aforementioned Rangers homestands:

    June 8-10 vs. El Paso
    July 3-5 vs. Pensacola
    July 6-8 vs. El Paso
    July 19-22 vs. Pensacola
    July 23-25 vs. Coastal Bend

    I love independent baseball.
    I haven't been to their recently-built ballpark yet, but I hear it's a beauty:
