A sensible approach, though I wonder about Street a little bit. He really took a big step back this past season. Forget the minor injuries, he lost his job as Oakland's closer and they replaced him with unknowns for a reason.

I also wonder just how reasonable the financial demands for Fuentes are going to be. The market on the closers hasn't really been set yet.

Yeah, but in the Mets' case, Street would have been the eighth inning bridge to Fuentes or K-Rod. He would not have been the closer.

Understood, but my point is he was demoted for substandard performance. It probably would make more sense to trade those two for Street and sign Fuentes, but let's see just how much money Fuentes gets before making that call.

That's certainly a reasonable way to go, but if you get Street and Fuentes you're depending on two guys who lost their closer jobs with their old teams, and the Mets can't afford to get this wrong again. I'd be particularly wary of Street, partly because he's had some injuries and partly because Billy Beane seemed to sour on him in a hurry. However, I would still trade Heilman and Feliciano for him in a NY minute.

On the bright side, they'll help fans fix their Dell computers.

Actually, Street nixed the deal becuase he didn't want to change the spelling and pronunciation of his first name.

    (NYC joke)

The Mets could have had Scott Linebrink and Jeremy Affeldt last winter among others, and now they're scrambling for all kinds of parts. They're not going to land all of these guys, needless to say.

And I am amazed Heilman thinks he has a future with anyone, let alone the Mets.

Scott Linebrink who managed to pitch all of 46 innings last season.
Jeremy Affeldt, he of the 4.55 career ERA and 1.478 WHIP.

No different than the rest of the crap in the Mets' pen

    I miss Tug McGraw.

(Or, at least, what I've seen of him in highlights and read about him.)

At least it would have been different crap. How many times can I watch Heilman, Feliciano and Schoeneweis do the same shit (with Ayala in a guest role) two consecutive summers. It's criminal the thing was allowed to truly fester as it did. And the Mets will still be up a creek come April.

The Mets are making noises about Fuentes being overpriced as well. He is supposedly asking for $10 million a year for at least three seasons.

    Then he is overpriced.
