    I'm with IJAG and Flash.

I was laughing my ass off at the NHL last night. Almost kill a guy by high-sticking his jugular? 10 game suspension.

Insult Elisha Cuthbert!?! Death penalty!!!

They're announcing the Team Canada selection camp roster for the World Juniors on tsn.ca

Only in Canada would they have a press conference to announce the players being chosen for the try-outs.

I'm not defending the league. Chris Simon should have been suspended for life following his attempted decapitation of fellow nimrod Ryan Hollweg. And yes, the league looks ridiculous for dropping the hammer on Avery for a high school insult that--and worse--is heard on the ice every night.

That said, I think the league's powers-that-be are tired of having to call Avery onto the carpet to tell him to watch his act. And the fact that this seemed to be premeditated, along with his previous history, that was enough for the league.

Personally, I would have loved to have seen Phaneuf vs. Avery last night.

Point taken, but what about the Rangers sexual harassment and all that? The NHL didn't seem to care.

Bettman did the Stars a huge favor last night. No Avery on the ice, and they win on the road and climb 3 points clear of the league cellar. Imagine that.

This team was the second-to-last one eliminated from last year's Stanley Cup. Yeah, losing Morrow for the year was a blow. But getting rid of Avery is addition by subtraction. The room doesn't need his bullshit.

I too thought he'd said something much worse than "sloppy seconds" when I read the (redacted) wire story.

I just, I guess, don't see how this was even worth a talking to. Who cares if it was premeditated? I just don't understand why a league cares that one guy, no matter his history, said something mean about a Hollywood starlet. He didn't threaten anyone. He didn't disparage his team or his teammates.

He talked about a girl he used to sleep with. THAT'S worth being suspended from your job now, regardless of what else you've done?

I mean, it just absolutely boggles my mind.

Again, I think it's as much about his history and the league being sick of his crap as it is about the comment that led to the suspension.

    Sirs, Madames,

    Re Avery:

A bunch of media types say: That's awful.

A bunch of satellite radio guys say: I wish I said that.

What he deserves is the same punishment befitting an instigator--don't kick him out, make him play. Instigate a fight, opposing team gets to pick any player on the ice to send to the box and the instigator has to stay on the ice for five minutes. Sean Avery trash talks -- you're doing him a favour by kicking him out. Make him back it up.

Watching ESPNEWS last night, they teased, "And find out what Sean Avery said about an ex-girlfriend that got him suspended indefinitely."

During commerical, I said to Mr. Lugs: "Must have been a death threat or something."

Then they come back from break, and the anchor tags his lead-in with, "A warning. What you are about to hear might be graphic or offensive to some." And I braced myself. I actually considered changing the channel.

Then I heard 'sloppy seconds,' and I just started laughing my ass off. ;D

Right. But this isn't "crap." This isn't something that anyone should even pay attention to.
