IJAG, you have to understand the guy in question.

Sean Avery has a big target on his back right now. The league is out to nail him for any & every transgression.

If you're trying to grow the sport, you don't need some mouthbreathing neanderthal spewing crap like this on national television.

The fact that he is being condemned by his teammates and peers is all you really need to know.

Luggy, I agree with your point. And I don't know what the answer is other than to say that I guess the league arbitrarily decides what is suspension worthy and what is not. The league should have looked into the Rangers sexual harassment escapades. I do not know why it did not.

In this case, I think the league, while doth protesting too much about the tastelessness of his comments, was trying to guarantee that a Bertuzzi-like incident did not take place. But should the NHL overreact to insults between players and suspend players? I'm not completely comfortable with that.

This is the right answer. If Avery is going to have big balls to spout off about players and their loved ones (that's the reason Marty Brodeur hates him), he should be held accountable by his fellow players on the ice.

If he wants to pop off about Dion Phaneuf and his squeeze, then Avery can back up his words in a scrap.

Yes, because, as we all know, no other professional sports league has EVER imposed a ridiculous punishment on any of its athletes for things like wearing shorts that are too long, or wearing items of clothing not supplied by official league sponsors, or paying tribute to a murdered friend, or "excessively" celebrating a touchdown, or any number of other silly things deemed to be worthy of executive-suite coffer-filling. Maybe the NHL is crazy like a fox.

The NHL is being talked about on blogs and talk radio today.

First time I've paid a lick of attention this season.

And a post on this thread reminded me to look up a player I interviewed last year and see how he's doing.

All part of the (admittedly stupid) rules.

Until it's in the bylaws that you can't insult a chick you used to date, well, this is spineless and reeks of desperation. And patheticity. (I made up a word. Suck it.)

In all these articles I've read, nobody has tried to get a comment from Phaneuf, Cuthbert, or given any background on when Avery and Cuthbert dated.

I know it seems Us-magazinish for a sportswriter to "go there," but by way of the facts, a line of explanation would be helpful.

Calgary Sun had quotes from Phaneuf. All the defenseman said was that he thought Avery's comments were disrespectful and he supported the league's decision.

Oh good. Good for the Sun (and Phaneuf for taking the high road).

I'm sure Us or People will get something from Cuthbert's rep. That oughta be pretty good.

If I may put on an 'average Joanne fan' hat for a moment...

The classy comments by Phaneuf prompted me to look him up. He's way hotter than Avery. Am I right, ladies?

Let's see... For Cuthbert, it was nice, cute guy vs. pissant with a 'serial killer' look. Gee that must have been a tough choice for her.

    Yeah, you're wrong.

Avery is WAY hotter. Know nothing of Phaneuf, he may be salt of the earth. But on looks only, Phaneuf looks like a fratboy dork.
