As Steen goes, it must be mentioned that John Ferguson refused to part with him in June 2006 -- a deal that would have sent him to Edmonton with Tomas Kaberle for Chris Pronger.

    Ouch.

Shoalts had a good column on the trade today and echoed what a lot of people have thought about the Colaiacovo /Steen trade.

Both players are classic examples of that Toronto phenomenon — the player who is overrated in the minds of the fans and some media simply because he was a high draft pick by the Leafs. Sometimes this results in an overly swollen head on the player's part, which is what more than one reporter noticed when interviewing Colaiacovo and, at times, Steen.

"He's got blue-and-white disease," one NHL management type said of Colaiacovo, whose status as a hometown boy probably played into his attitude. "He's been there too long and thinks he's special."

    It's the Darcy Tucker syndrome.

Great game last night by Curt Sanford - 32 saves, among them several beauties, and the W over Detroit.

Not bad for a guy who supposedly isn't an NHL-calibre netminder. ;D

It really does run in the family!

Paddy's other son, Frederick Roy, has been suspended 15 games by the Q.

    Sirs, Madames,

Another Leaf phenomenon is the pumping-up of a prospect's perceived potential before anyone has seen him play (or play much). A purely abstract approach to the game--sort of like picking horses based on the sound of their names.

I think of it as "the Landon Wilson syndrome." It can apply to the likes of Eric Fichaud, Luca Cereda (who was actually pretty talented) or Justin Pogge, although why you'd want a goaltender named Justin as opposed to Justout, I dunno.

I thought Colaiacovo as a junior wasn't as good and not nearly as puck-skilled as Brendan Bell (though Bell was three-ply soft after a bad concussion). I though Pilar had a chance to be a solid top-four guy. I used to crack up when I heard talk-radio guys talking about the risk of losing Jay Harrison on waivers--he'd pass through waivers like a meteorite passes through the stratosphere.

This has "goal of the year" potential, but for all the wrong reasons:

I'm interrupting this thread to announce that Brampton has won 16 in a row, the fourth longest winning streak in OHL history. Beat the Wolves on Sunday.

At some point someone will confirm that the only reason Jared Staal was drafted was because of his bloodlines.

Up against Niagara twice this week and a game against the Kingston Killers on Friday.

    Thank you.

Yeah, saw this last night. Poor fucking guy - he will never, as long as he breathes, live that down.

That was O'Byrne's last shift of the game, not surprisingly. His excuse was that he thought he was passing the puck to Carey Price......I guess he wasn't aware a delayed penalty had been called and Price was on the bench. But, really, there is no excuse for not being aware of something like that.

    No Duchene.

I heard shoulder but nothing more.

Della Rovere had a good game last night against the Russians although at times he was channeling Downie.

I thought the Hunter family in London was bad. Their offspring are angels compared to the Roy bunch.

So you're saying he's the Murray Howe of the Staal family?
