I didn't see dropping Penn State out of the top 10 or on the fringe as a possibility.

Who do you have playing for the title? USC?
First, you have to beat the Beavers in the regular season Trojans (not done), then to make a statement to voters, you have to beat Cal, a ranked team, by more than 14 (not done). They don't have it, and without a perfect season they didn't have a shot.
USC had the best non-conference win of anyone (Ohio State), but blew it when they lost to Oregon State.

So, you think that Almighty Alabama will win the title and beat Florida?
I think the SEC Champ, which will likely be Florida, could beat the Big 12 winner, and it will be a much better game than anything we have seen in the National Championship in the last few years.
I think the system will work now, with Penn State out of the picture.

SC and Texas would be a good game, but not a National Title game. We're here to see who the best team in the land is, and neither of those teams are that.

So you'd put Florida, which lost to an unranked Ole Miss team at home, in the national championship game?

Hey, if anything, I'm a Big 12 homer, the SEC is WAY OVERRATED. It's just that Florida is better than USC, Penn State, and any other one-loss team.
Florida lost by one, USC was getting smoked by Oregon State. Florida has since beat the ever-loving crap out of others, while USC dilly-dallies except when beating Washington, the worst by-god team there is in the country.
This year is a perfect example of why we need a playoff, so the top 8 can slug it out.
