OK, I'm probably opening up a can of worms here, but I have to ask...

Why not Utah as No. 1?

The Utes are the only unbeaten team in the nation. They whipped Alabama's ass (listen and you can still hear Tide fans howling) in the bowl game and played, what, four ranked teams, winning them all.

Why all this talk about a one-loss Big 12 team (which all looked like shit in the bowl games - go Mizzou!) or USC, which has two quality non-con. wins (both against (sigh) Big 10 schools - Didn't PSU beat the shit out the same Oregon State team that beat USC, but managed a whopping field goal against Pitt?) or that SEC beast Florida, which lost AT HOME to Ole Miss and needed four quarters to wear down Alabama.
Don't get me started on Texas.

I guess, what I am saying is an argument can be made against each and every one of these teams - you know because they all have at least one loss - save Undefeated Utah. It shouldn't matter if they are a WAC team or not. Unlike a lot of the national powers, Utah didn't play any non-con. creampuffs that other more traditional national powers like to do.

If Utah was say West Virginia, a Big East team, that was 13-0 there would be no questions or debate about it. WVU would be No. 1.
Nevermind, WVU - had it gone unbeaten would have played LESS ranked teams than Utah played - and beat- this season.

There is a double standard in play here.

It baffles me Utah is not a consensus No. 1. Or the very least getting a LOT more support on here.

What also kills me is when people claim the MW isn't strong and Utah didn't play as many ranked teams. Perhaps. But perhaps they didn't play as many ranked teams because of a poll system that favors BCS conferences. Was Air Force as good as Vandy or NC State or Colorado or Cal? Maybe...

Not so sure about that. The Tide were only 15 minutes away from playing Oklahoma tonight, and their two losses are against teams with a combined record of 25-1. Among two-loss teams, only TCU -- with losses to Oklahoma and Utah, a combined 26-1 -- can boast a similar resume.

Agreed on Utah, Orville and slappy. While no one would have thought it at the beginning of the year, those wins against Alabama and TCU look awfully good now.

I have Nos. 6-25 for my poll done. The top five spots -- some combination of Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, USC and Utah -- will shake out tonight.

For no good reason that I can see. One and six. Remember that: one and six.

Big1T1en hasn't had a winning record in bowls since 2002.

Given that I had Bammer at 9 coming in, that's a foregone conclusion.

Angola, why are your panties in such a twist over my picks?

Why don't you just worry about yours and let me worry about mine?

And your one-word replies? That's really insightful.

That's what I had, but I'm seriously considering jumping Utah to No. 1. Using my tentative final ballot, Florida and Utah have the same number of victories against my top 25 and my top 10, and only one of them has a loss.

    5. Oklahoma
    6. TCU
    7. Penn State
    8. Alabama
    9. Georgia
    10. Boise St.
    11. Ohio State
    12. Texas Tech

    21. Cincinnati
    22. Georgia Tech

    25. Ball State

    - Had real trouble deciding on a No. 6 team after that top five. (I know, PaperDragon: "Justify USC at NO. 1, FANBOIY!!!!!!")
    - It looks kinda screwy. But early returns are also all over the place, so I guess it was that kind of year.
