Boy, USC must have some kind of team to crack that SEC/Big 12 alliance you have.

So two hours from deadline, can we publicly shame the stragglers yet?

Just sent in my poll. I'm golden ;)

I kept my top 3 the same, but moved up LSU. Them Tigers sure looked sharp -- albeit against a 3-time FCS champion, but still, color me impressed.

I had trouble rounding out the last 5 picks... Gamecocks' offense was horrid against NCSU; Vols lost in OT; Pat Hill has Fresno State cookin' and well, par for his Clemson career, Bowden's Tigers looked like kittens that couldn't find a teat to suckle on.

    22. Tennessee
    23. South Carolina
    24. Fresno State
    25. Clemson

Alabama, Oregon, UCLA, Fresno, East Carolina and South Carolina all cracked my 25 (Utah was already there).

Not only for the wins, but they actually decided to play a football team and not a sisters-of-the-poor squad this week.

Clemson, Michigan, Tennessee, Rutgers and the others that lost are out. You gotta win to be in this early in the season.

Actually, he PM'd me that he was probably going to be doubtful this week because of circumstances beyond his control, so yeah, he gets a free pass signed by Principal Gustav.

Re: 2008 SportsJournalists.com college football poll -- PRESEASON, Aug. 18

To answer two questions in one post: Not an Alabama/Big 12/SEC fan at all. My team lost to open the season and it's not one of the two I have in my poll. Again, I'm all about results. The rest will take care of itself as the weeks pass. I have reasoning for every pick at every spot.

LSU gets my top spot as the defending national champ until they lose, something I've done since we started this poll.

Southern Cal flat dominated Virginia more than any other school against a power conference opponent.

Alabama shut down a team widely thought to be the best in the ACC on a neutral field.

The only think that kept Missouri from No. 3 was that Illinois' offense had an easy time with them. But even with a garbage TD with no time on the clock, they beat a good team (but maybe only the fourth best in the Big 10) by 10 points on a neutral field.

Oklahoma was up 50-0 at halftime, had already taken its starters out early in the second quarter and then had to endure and hour and a half rain delay.

Even though Florida played a June Jones/Colt Brennan-less Hawaii, they are still a D-1 program and they beat them handily.

Texas is right on Florida's heels because while they did defeat a team that won a bowl game last season, it was the Sun Belt champion. But it's still D-1.

Auburn and Ohio State could have probably flip-flopped but I'll give the team that shutouts a D-1 school and scores 34 the edge over a team that shuts out a D-1AA that had a losing record last season and didn't make the playoffs and scores 34.

It's real simple to me. Play better people and you get rewarded. Take on Northern Arizona and win 30-13, Arizona State, and you don't. Struggle with Eastern Washington for three quarters, Texas Tech, and you'll get nothing. But I;m not going to go crazy and give Arizona a boatload of credit for putting up 70 on Idaho.
