The purpose of tonight's game was to show Charles Wang that KC has a top notch arena and fans. Arena is really nice but no fans. They had months to pull this off.

we just need to connect the dots. Wang is threating to move the team if he doesnt get a building to KC, Anshutz owns the Kings and he just happens to own the arena in KC. Same reason the league opened in London, in a rink owned by Anshutz. Bettman once again not acting in the best interests of the game.

    Shades of the Norris family.

And I agree - once again, the NHL fails to act in the best interests of the game.

I particularly enjoyed reading this exchange, published on Saturday, between Judge Baum and an NHL lawyer.

Scene: Poor Tony Clark, attorney for the NHL. Mr. Clark had to explain why the Quebec Nordiques could be sold and moved in a hurry in the 1990s, but the Coyotes, according to the same NHL constitution, could not.

Judge Baum: "The NHL doesn't always follow what's in the constitution, does it?"

Clark replied Quebec to Colorado was an "extraordinary" circumstance.

Judge Baum: "Are these extraordinary circumstances?"

    Mr. Clark: "We'll find out."

Judge Baum: "This team has lost something along the lines of $300 million in 12 years. How extraordinary does it have to get?"

Ladies and gentlemen, the National Hockey League - disingenuousness at its finest.

    Define "over the limit."

How do you underplay a Flames legend, the only remaining active member of Calgary's only Stanley Cup-winning team, making a comeback with the Flames and actually looking like he might belong there?

Imagine Wendel Clark coming out of retirement and rejoining the Leafs - the city of Toronto would lose its collective fucking mind.

Not only that, but any walk-up crowd had to be discouraged by Tavares not playing -- which the people knew for a week or so -- and the fact that they would pay full NHL prices to watch the Manchester Monarchs beat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. If were to full NHL rosters, there would have been more buzz, more ticket sales.

For the record, announced attendance was 9,792.

Love this tidbit from the guy at K-C Star

Unfortunately for Kansas City, Tavares, a forward expected to be the next Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby rolled into one, won’t be part of a split squad when the Islanders face the AEG-owned Los Angeles Kings at 7 tonight at the Sprint Center.

Better ease up on the hyperbolemeter. I can't think of a person in hockey who thinks, has thought or will think that.

Whatever excuses you can come up with, attracting less than 10,000 to a preseason game in a city that's trying to get an NHL team ain't good optics.

that's pre season hockey in every market. You can spin anyway you like but if you are trying to make an impression on the league this was not a good one. Oh wait, Bettmans buddy Anshutz wants a team in KC so it'll happen, deserved or not.
