    The day the racin' died.

It's a heartbreaking shame what has become of his organization.

    Pass the jug, boys. :'(

I still remember leaving the track that night at about midnight and seeing all the makeshift monuments and wakes in the infield.

Went into Dirty Harry's and met some friends who were just disconsolate.

It was a surreal night and so was the long ride home the next day.

We forget it now, but everyone truly believed Earnhardt was invincible, because he was the baddest ass in a sport loaded with them.

It was almost impossible to believe he could die in a crash.

I know that sounds stupid, but in 1997, he rolled on the backstretch at nearly 200 mph, and as he was climbing into the ambulance, he looked at his car and said, "Wait a minute! All four wheels are still on!" And with that, he got back in the car and finished the race.

    RIP, you crazy bastard.

I spent some time in the garage area during his career. The man had a presence.

Thanks for linking the Hinton piece, 2mcm.

    RIP

I got a call from my editor the next day, "we hear there's some kind of impromptu wake tonight on so-and-so beach, go see if it's worth a story." It was worth a story all right, there were easily 2,000 people on what was just a little spit of a beach. The organizer was a guy with an early-80s Pontiac done up exactly like Earnhardt's old blue-and yellow Wrangler, down to the spoiler and window net. There were also some smart guys selling the Earnhardt memorial car-window stickers for $10-20 a pop.

Thanks for linking the Hinton piece. Hinton, when he's on, can't be touched. That was glorious.

Anyone else read that and think that his greatest hits shouldn't be posted on a Sentinel blog, but that Hinton should be writing the Sentinel blog? Nice job, newspaper industry.

    Hinton's still kicking butt, too.

Apropos of nothing and barely related to NASCAR ...

How do you know your neighbor's a car nut? His driveway looks like this:

    :D

Completely related to NASCAR: Yates and Gilliland announced today that they're splitting up.

Probably a good thing given that he's driving for TRG this weekend.

What do you think Earnhardt would think and say about the NASCAR of 2009?

That driveway track bears a faint resemblence (sp?) to the racetrack at Sonoma.

    Has some Anderstorp-ish qualities too.
