Fun day ... Tambellini tries to recapture Canucks with Quinn and Renney, while Sutter tries to relive 2004 with himself.

    Sigh ...

Still not sure how I like the hire for the Oilers. Have never been a Quinn fan, but I am relieved that they brought on Renney in the capacity that they did to off-set Quinn.
I'm willing to give it a shot, see how it plays out, and am very thankful that Marc Crawford wasn't the hire.
Tambellini was definitely swinging for the fences with this one and it will either be a huge success or they will flame out. I don't think they will toil in the mediocrity that they have for the past 15 seasons. At the very least coaching shouldn't be the problem.
And to answer JR, the two are pretty much co-coaches, except that Quinn will have the final say. As an associate coach Renney will have far more power on the bench and in the dressing room than Buchberger who has been retained as an assistant coach. If that makes sense. That's what I can figure from what I've heard from the interviews today. Should be interesting in the least.

Very sad news. Only 44 years old. RIP, Peter. :'(

Isn't Brent Sutter still under contract in New Jersey?

If so, I figure there's going to have to be compensation involved if he takes another job.

He is still very much under contract.
Talk is Darryl goes back behind the bench for the upcoming year holding the spot for Brent.
Darryl basically said yesterday that he has a short list of four coaches. He is the fourth coach on that list. The other three are currently under contract and wouldn't comment further. It is assumed that Brent is one. By under contract I don't know if that means they are currently happily employed like say Brent, or if they are sitting there being paid not to coach like a Craig MacTavish. either way he would have to secure permission to even talk to them -- I doesn't cost anything to get permission, although they can say no -- let alone lure them away. He said if his first three choices don't work out, he'll coach.

Beef, why again didn't you want Crawford? I know you explained it but I'm to lazy to look.

Paraphrasing but Darryl said something along the lines of: 'if at the end of the process, I'm the best guy for the job then I'm the coach of the Calgary Flames.'

    Hubris? Or reality?

Hugely popular Leaf. Nice piece by Paul Hunter in today's Star

"I'll never forget the look on his face when he found out that he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was like he'd won the lottery," recalls Kypreos, a Capitals teammate.

"He was just beside himself. Knowing he was going to Toronto to put on a Maple Leafs jersey was in many ways, like winning the Stanley Cup."

Montreal has stripped Koivu of the C and given it to Kovalev, apparently.

Never have liked him, never had a reason to like him. Just a couple of reasons off the top of my head. He's coached two of the Oilers biggest rivals in recent years. His voice grates on me, could not imagine going through years of listening to him. The 1998 Olympic gong show (so many reasons built into that one alone). That and I think he is very overrated. Again not a fan. May have been forced to temporarily switch rooting interests.

His voice is grating. I think he is a very good coach. If Vancouver ever had even average goaltending in the years he was coaching they could have done some damage. Plus I like that he coaches up tempo hockey.
Completely understand your reasons though. Tough to start liking a coach who has been coaching against your team since 96

    Isn't Kovalev a UFA?
