I always thought you could, I remeber St. Louis having to give up compensation for Keenan. the Canucks also gave up a second rounder to sign Crawford. Things may have changed. He's still under contract to the Devils so i was assuming the Flames would have to compensate the Devils if Lamorello wants compensation.

Yeah, I get that, and I realize I'm assuming a couple of things as well, but it's still the NHL.

You can no longer get compensation for coaches/front office employees. Bettman changed that after Ottawa held up Peter Chiarelli's move to Boston.

Heard a wild rumour today that Brent Sutter will join Steve Yzerman with Team Canada, but don't know if I'd believe that. Lamoriello, however, can prevent Sutter from working in the NHL this year, if he so desires.

    Elliotte,

Any rumblings yet on who might get the NJ job?

    Huggy,

Curious to see if John MacLean gets elevated. He's been coach-in-waiting for about 7 years. Jacques Lemaire turned down a consultant-type job from Florida because he had another offer, so we're wondering if it's possible that he'll go back, even though a lot of us assume that offer is from Montreal.

I'm sure Peter Laviolette will be in the mix -- but one thing about Lamoriello: he does everything secretly.

It would be hard to believe him coming to Calgary after all the stories about how much he missed the ranch and his family. Being in Calgary would ease that a little, but he's still not going to be in Red Deer much.

I really wonder if hockey philosophies of Laviolette and Lamoriello would allow them to productively work together unless one or both changed their approaches.

    Read my mind.

Peter Laviolette is a fantastic coach who should get another shot. But is Jersey the right shot for him. Not only are they different philosophically, but Lavs will also be playing a little less goaltender roulette with that Brodeur guy there. Just a guess ...

That was my thinking. It was comparable to Steve Spurrier in football. Guy had accomplishment pretty much everything at the junior level, name was a hot commodity, so why not give it a try? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I would be absolutely shocked if the Devils allowed him to work for another NHL team next season. Look at the precedent that would set regarding contracts.
