Crazy. 12 years? I could count on one hand the number of players I would give contracts of longer than five years to. Just too many things can happen health-wise, hockey-wise, economically.

Look at the Islanders and the contract they gave Rick DiPietro a few years back. Now they feel the need to go out and sign another veteran goaltender?

I'm also shocked at the money thrown around on journeymen players. There are very few players who are true difference makers. And, no, Mattias Ohlund is not one of them. Nice, solid defenseman, but he's no Lidstrom or Niedermayer. Some of these guys make the brinks job look mild by comparison.

 

If you think Ohlund isn't going to make a difference to a Lightning defense that suited up 23 different players last season, and has a core that is entirely under 25 before his and Walker's signing, I'm not sure what to tell you.

 

Oh, he'll help. Won't make them go from 14th in the conference to 4th, or whatever. Good piece of the puzzle, just a bit overpriced.

 

Kovalev might be next Habs captain.
