I'm wondering if this is a decent risk/reward-type deal. If Gaborik is finally right again, couldn't he end up being a steal at that price?

Gaborik deal is $7.5/season -- now I'd really rather have Gomez.

Yep. Dreger just moved a corrected tweet.

Now THAT'S the Rangers we're used to.

Given the choices (and prices), I think I'd rather have neither.

    Floodgates opening back up:

DarrenDreger tweet: RDS says Gionta to Mtl... 5 years, $25 mil.

    Points last three years: 45, 53, 60

The difference between $5.75 million and $7.5 million traverses the line from potentially a good, if risky, deal to what in the blazes are the Rangers thinking?

It's so funny. They've got a guy that's pretty much the poster boy for horrible deals in the salary cap world. They find (I'm guessing) the one GM willing to take the guy off their hands ... and then immediately do pretty much the same thing again.

If it works, it's brilliant. But it's MIGHTY high-risk.

You asked for it: Brian Gionta, 5-7.

How could anyone with a brain sink that kind of money into the former?

Then again, that leaves Bob Gainey and Don Waddell out of the equation ...

I've gotta be honest: For the week or so that he's healthy, that's a decent deal for the Rangers.

Still, do the extra autograph sessions and the meet-and-greets while he's healing from one of his 37 ailments compensate for the rest?
