So you're saying the Oceanic, um, won't be a factor? :)

I'm curious (paging Double J), when did this format of the host city getting in start?

And how did they work it prior to that?

I know I could look it up but I'm lazy.

Boudreau tells a great story about the 1973 series. (And, to be honest, I'm not sure it was a traditional best-of-seven. The OHA used a format known as an 8-point series, so there were occasions where more than seven games could be played.)

Anyway, Bob Gainey (Peterborough) had a breakaway, and if he'd scored, Toronto was done. He deked Palmateer out of his jock but missed the open net, literally putting the puck through the crease. The Marlies scored the winner minutes later.

As for the Malone rumour, I inadvertently played a role in its explosion. It had been reported (by Pierre LeBrun and Damien Cox weeks earlier), but didn't take a life of its own until I mentioned it on The Fan the other day and they went bonkers with it.

Toronto badly wants to move up, and the Lightning want to dump salary -- despite their denials. There were a number of sources who told me that this was being discussed, but I don't think the Leafs want that contract, either. However, Malone is a great teammate, and we a good fit in either room. Unfortunately, his deal is a bit of a cap-buster.

1983, Portland. The host Winter Hawks became the first American-based team to win it that year.

From 1972 to 1982, the three league champions met in a site that alternated between the leagues:

    1972: Ottawa
    1973: Montreal
    1974: Calgary
    1975: Kitchener
    1976: Montreal
    1977: Vancouver
    1978: Soo/Sudbury
    1979: Sherbrooke/Trois-Rivieres/Verdun
    1980: Brandon/Regina
    1981: Windsor
    1982: Hull

Toronto tied the seventh game 5-5 to win the series eight points to six; Paulin Bordeleau converted a penalty shot in the late stages (the last minute? I can't remember off the top of my head) to gain the tie. The standing was 3-2-2 in the Marlies' favour.

I've seen plenty of Windsor lately and I will be really intrigued to see how they deal with Kelowna's big D. Hall, Mitchell and Loktionov aren't the biggest guys, we'll see how they like it when things get really rough in the corners and in front of the net.

I expect to see at least one implosion this tourney from Boughner, Rychel and Co. over the officiating. The Spits play on the edge much of the time and it worked in the O, but you never know how refs in the other leagues will call a game.

Thanks, Elliotte, very interesting, about Malone. Which series you got this round?

And the Spits, suddenly and unexpectedly, may not be.
