I've got to think there's some truth to Flair not wanting to cheapen his match. Sure, it's a convenient plot point, but Flair seems like a guy who went out on his own terms and wouldn't want to degrade that moment.
And Austin has had to stay away, but if he'd wanted to I'm sure the WWE could have found some non-wrestling role that would have kept him in the spotlight. Announcing, maybe, or an occasional guest referee spot. Maybe even as GM of one of the brands. But he's pretty much been gone.

Terry Funk, to me, takes the title of most times un-retired. Hogan's a close second.

As for Backlash, my feeling is that Shane turns on Triple H and joins Legacy. I think this enables HBK to return and re-team with Triple H.

Speaking of that old bastard, I watched he and Sabu's barbedwire match today. The pace was terrible and it really wasn't good wrestling at all, but you can't expect much when these guys are getting gashed all over their bodies.

That's something I can get behind. Shane is a third-generation "superstar" and would fit right into the cocky Legacy attitude. You move HBK over to align with Triple H and Batista and reinvent DX. Lots of fun could be had with that feud.

And Randy Orton is the new champ. Can't say I'm upset with that move.

I have seen the crowd react positively to Orton a lot, but tonight... wow. They cheered the RKO and punt almost like a Stone Cold Stunner on Vinnie Mac back in the day.

They're actually signing "na nah nah nah hey hey goodbye" as Trips lays there from the kick. Awesome.

    Not a bad PPV.

Orton is new champ. Christian beat Swagger, gained title. Jeff beat Matt. Kane pinned Punk. Ummm... don't remember anything else.

Cena-Edge got better as the match went on.

A great holy shit moment at the end.
