Magic and Kareem. Who was the "sidekick"?

    Fixed.

OK. So a Top-5 all-time player who was team captain (and whose nickname was "Captain") was a sidekick.

If that's possible, then there's no reason why Wade or James can't be the same.

Same way that Elway was when the Broncos won. I'm not saying he's right that it can't work, but your comparison is off - both are either in pr entering their primes.

Funny but my interest in the NBA this season may have peaked on opening night.

You're missing out then, Boom. A lot of really good games so far and there's a ton of great young talent. There are probably only five or six teams with title aspirations but for anyone who uses that to talk about the good old days of the NBA, uh, check the history books. How many teams had legitimate chances to win the title during the glory era of the 1980s? You'd have the Celtics, Lakers and Sixers between 1980 and 1986, with a Houston upset thrown in twice but then twice they got drilled in the Finals. The Bucks, I suppose, some years were considered a threat. Who else? Then in the late 1980s, Philly was done, replaced by the Pistons. There are always only a limited number of teams who have a legit shot at the title. That's what happens in a sport where great players stick around on the same team and a few superstars can make you a contender.

With the Magic-Kareem talk, that's totally different, because it was an inside-outside combo, and they both complemented each other perfectly. If Magic had played in the 1980s with Isiah, that would have been a bit more comparable. Two all-time great point guards but neither would have achieved the career success they had if they played in the same backcourt. The Lakers had trouble as it was with Nixon and Magic sharing the space, much less two all-timers who would have dominated the ball, like Wade and LeBron. Not that it won't work, of course. Nixon and Magic did win two titles together.

Anyway, one of the early disappointments is OKC. 2-2 after getting throttled by the Clippers tonight and Utah the other night. And needed a buzzer beater to defeat winless Detroit. I still think they'll win 55ish games but just can't see them taking out the Lakers in the West. It's still the same team as last year that will have some of the same struggles.

Kareem complemented Magic perfectly because if the fast break was not there, all they needed to do was feed the post.

Without Kareem, even with Magic's greatness, they don't win a damn thing.

Put Kareem on the Suns, Sonics, Spurs or Nuggets, and they win it all instead of the Lakers.

Towson and European ball alum gary Neal lighting it up for the Spurs, on the road at Charlotte.
Neal's hit 5 three-pointers and Spurs are up 6 late.
Nice to see Michael on the Bobcat bench, too.
Good game, on Fox Sports Southwest channel, for those who get it.

EDIT: Spurs win by about 3
San Antonio, winners of 3 titles in 8 past eight seasons, moves to 5-1
