Kovalev's good times in Pittsburgh were a looooooong time ago. Pretty amazing that his value has fallen to the point he was traded for a 7th-round pick.

And Orpik's injury is a broken finger. Out 4 weeks.

That's a big loss for the Penguins. Through all of the injuries, the defense has remained fairly intact, which is why they've been hanging in there.

Still waiting for the Caps to make a move ... I've got a sneaky feeling that Friday will be the last time we see Semin in a Washington sweater.

And apparently the 4 weeks is the best-case scenario. Now hearing 4-to-6. At this point, Pens are just trying to tread water until Crosby comes back, if Crosby comes back.

If he's out for the year, they're toast. If he comes back, they'll make for one hell of a tough first-round matchup for one of the division winners (assuming they fall back into the 6/7/8-seed area).

A couple other trades today. Ducks swap goalies with Tampa --send McElheny to Bolts for Dan Ellis.
Les Habitants get Sopel and Dawes from Thrashers for prospect Ben Maxwell and a fourth round pick.

Two trades that register a two in the excitement meter.

Ducks are hard up in their goalie situation with Hiller still out to what is now being called possibly vertigo. That left them with Emery who is attempting a comeback after reconstructive hip surgery and had played exactly two AHL games and McElwhatshisname who had been inconsistent as a backup and has never been a No. 1 in the show. Ellis is an upgrade, but not a huge one. I see Emery taking over down the stretch if he can rediscover his form.

The Canadiens move is all about depth. Sopel is a third pairing defenceman and Dawes is a third or fourth line forward.

Emery played three games in Syracuse, won two of them. The last game, he made 31 of 34 saves and stopped all three shootout attempts. Not saying he's the savior, but getting the facts correct.
McElhinney's performance collapsed after Hiller went out the second time. Last night, he gave up three goals after the team gave up 21 in the three previous games (he was yanked after a four-goal first period in the third one). Last night, on the first and third goals, he was screened, had no chance. I felt only the second was a bad goal. He gave up a soft rebound and didn't know where the puck was (it was right in front of him). He didn't jam the near post and it became an easy goal.

Does anybody know what time the deadline? I know it's Monday, and I can frind trade trackers and promos for shows like Tradecentre, but I can't find an actual time when the deadline hits. My gut is 5 p.m. in the east. Is this right?

Apparently everything old is new again in both Pittsburgh and Carolina.

Hate the Sopel trade. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Would rather they have found a new home for Oduya. At least Sopel blocks shots.

Just a hunch: Crosby's not done for the season. Not sure the Pens would trade for Kovalev if they planned on him not returning.

Looser Leafs Fanboi checking in again.

Leafs beat the Habs 5-4 in an entertaining game and we're only four friggin points out of a playoff spot. A point behind the Sabres who have two games in hand. Thrashers sit in 8th

We got the Pens on Saturday, the Thrashers on Monday and the Pens again next week on Wednesday.

    All winnable.
