Trade Deadline Day. As Vinay Menon of the Star said, "The day sports networks start like The Situation Room before slowly turning into The View"

I love hockey, but this day is the biggest annual waste of time ever unless you're actually involved, ie. a player or a GM or an agent.

It was much more exciting in the pre-lockout era when you actually had some big trades.

So far this morning: Panthers send Radek Dvorak and a 5th rounder to the Preds for Nicolas Berfors and Patrick Rissmiller.

My favorite so far is Kovalev going for a 7th round pick last week. 7th round. Why didn't they just give him to the Pens and ask for a skate sharpening machine?

Joe McGrath is the greatest executive in hockey history. he should be in the HHOF! The man could turn nickels into quarters for Chrissakes....

Oilers trade Penner to Kings for first rd pick, a conditional 2nd/3rd rd pick next year and Colten Teubert.
Not sure how I feel about it. On surface it sounds like a lot, but that will be a late first pick this year, in what has been discussed and panned as a weak draft this year (I know I argued the opposite earlier, but the crux of my argument was the strength of the top 5 who I still think are excellent), and what could be a third rd pick if the kings flop in the playoffs. Teubert a first rd pick a couple of years ago was just a No. 4 Dman in Manchester and had struggled to cash in on his potential. My biggest memory of him from his junior days was not his role with Team Canada's Junior program but being somewhat enigmatic and a whipping boy among the fans in Regina. For a 30-goal scorer who was really settling in and finding his groove in Edmonton. The Oilers got a whole lot younger and a whole lot smaller today.
I'm not big on rebuilding teams selling off their top players all of the time at the deadline, especially those who are still in their 20s. It's how the Pittsburgh Pirates become the Pittsburgh Pirates. It's called perpetually rebuilding.
I know the Oilers took a lot of heat for the Penner deal, but out of 3 3/4 years in Edmonton there was only one year that was truly disappointing and that was as much about his relationship with MacT as anything. Also financially the contract was not restricting moving forward -- they are rebuilding and nowhere near the cap with one season to go on his deal.

only one year that was truly disappointing? That is some revisionist history at its best. Penners first year 47 pts, followed by 37 pts, decent year last year of 63 pts and is on pace for 52 points.

I understand why the Kings did it, they have a lot of youth and are on the verge of really contending but the Oilers made one hell of a deal here.
