The Capitals won this trade hands down, it made no sense for the Avalanche to make this trade since they didn't really need scoring. This is going to hurt them in my opinion. Great move by the Caps though, like it was said they needed a stay at home type of defensemen, and Hannan is that type of player.

Now all they need is a puck moving defenseman, maybe Campoli or even Kaberle, that would make them even more dangerous.

I think this was a snap-judgment move by the Avs after learning Chris Stewart will be out six weeks with a broken hand from his fight last weekend. Fleischmann is a nice player, but the Caps certainly got much better adding Hannan.

Isn't Mike Green the ultimate in Puck moving d-men.

Colorado had a n abundance of D-men and Hanna had a big ticket. I'm not sure how many of you have seem him play this year by the reaction this deal is getting. I like this deal for both teams.

I agree. It was a nice trade for the Caps because they got the stay at home guy they needed. They also have plenty of puck moving defencemen like Green and Poti. It was an abundance of those offensive D-men that required them to go out and get a Hannan.

Fleischmann isn't exactly chopped liver either. I don't know how much of a knee-jerk reaction this deal was. Often they are in the works for a few weeks before they are actually completed. It just works out that much better with Stewart going down. Fleischmann was under utilized in Washington and I think can be capable of 70-80 points in a season -- he's obviously not on that pace now for this year -- but you can never have enough scoring, especially if you have a back log of blueliners. Plus they save themselves a nice chunk of change in the exchange.

No doubt Tomas is a nice player. But there was some talk in the offseason of dealing him or not re-signing him (can't remember which), so I got the feeling he was the most expendable of the Caps' centers. The most glaring need for Washington, as Beef rightly points out, was for a physical defenseman who was willing to drop down and block shots. Green isn't that guy. He's an offensive defenseman, a puck mover, and asking him to stay at home negates his skill set. And aside from Poti and Erskine (and usual healthy scratch Tyler Sloan), most of the Caps' blueliners are young, so having some extra experience helps.

Colorado definitely got something in return. Fleischmann is a good player.

Fleischmann is definitely a good player. Hated to see the Wings give him up when they traded for Robert Lang, but you do have to give up something to get something.

Someone want to go make sure Ilmago is alright? Oilers comeback on Habs tonight, down 3-1 in third, to win in OT.

It'll be interesting to see if Rogers would actually be committed to building a winner, or whether they'd stay the longtime MLSE course - milk the brand, spend no more money than necessary and, oh yeah, milk the brand.

Well with the cap they can really only spend so much money anyway, the key is to spend it wisely. And it's not like they went cheap on the Burke and Wilson hirings. But milking the brand they would. You don't buy the Maple Leafs without the intention of milking it for everything that it's worth. Building a winner I'm sure they would give it a go, but it won't happen over night, if at all.

I always wondered about this, the Leafs are always at the top in terms of payroll and before the cap they spent as much as anybody. They sure as hell didn't spend it wisely but has not spending really been an issue in toronto?

I'll give the Oilers credit, they fought back, and never gave up. Montreal played terrible defense yesterday, cough up the puck to many times and took to many stupid penalties.

They OK'd $14 million to Jeff Finger. So no.
