It's like he knew he was going to need to look good that night.

Not sure about NHL, but they do get paid in the minors. A buddy of mine did a story once about the local head of the homicide division being pulled onto the bench for a game. He was given a flat fee ($150?), but would have to get the league minimum if he got in. There was a line from the GM saying if the starter got hurt, he was going to pull the plug in the arena.

My understanding (courtesy of Huggy) is that he would get 1/82 of the rookie league minimum which is $500,000

So, he got about $6,000 for suiting up, doing the warm-up and sitting on the bench

Personally I like this story better than the one last year where I think it was the Caps had to call in their Website guy to be the emergency back up for a game, he then of course wrote about it for the website.

$6,000 is a nice Christmas bonus.

At this point, I'm hoping the Caps will win a game before 2011.

Like tonight. Pretty much thought they were done again after falling down 2-0 in the first. But the Caps grind and find a way to stop the streak. On to the Devils Tuesday.

Evgeni Malkin is heating up. Has had a hand in the Penguins' last eight goals, including five tonight.

Great to see Geno healthy and flying around again. Now if they can ever get Staal back ...

Maybe now I can finally trade Malkin from my fantasy team. No takers over the past few weeks at all.

I was asked a question today I didn't know how to answer — and I'm not posing it to pile on or to criticize — I am really curious to know if anyone has an answer.

This bit of information about Casey Cizikas, a member of the Canadian junior team, has been well publicized outside of Canada. I link to Botta's blog becauseI think there's still a pub ban here. He certainly has shown remorse for what happened, been open about it, and developed into a good leader in the wake of these events, which would be difficult in itself.

How is he able to play in the U.S. with the juniors, with the Islanders in camp, and with the Majors? I thought the Americans were pretty strict about entry to their country for people in similar situations. Anyone know? I figured this story is bound to surface in the coming weeks.

For one he would have been a minor when the incident occurred.
