I've never seen someone off the ice so long and a team so secretive about progress regarding a broken hand. I fear there is more to it than what we know.

Yeah the whole thing has been very mysterious -- even by the NHL standard of mystery surrounding injuries. Anything they put on the site about him is very vague and the timeline for his return seems to always be "up to two weeks." Both injuries (the cut that led to the infection and the broken hand suffered at practice) were both very bizarre. I agree that there may be something more to his situation. At this point I hope to see him at all this season.

Sid extends his point streak to 21 games and leads Stamkos by 10 points.

Apologies if this is a d_b on this thread - or elsewhere - but here is a great story from GQ on Brian Burke's advocacy for gay athletes.

Pretty good read but I wish they would've elaborated a bit more on the details of the incident. Casey described it as self defense but I'm having trouble seeing how tackling someone in a rugby game could be considered self defense. Glad to see he's moving in the right direction given what he's been through.

If you Google "Toronto rugby death" you'll get a lot of stories about the incident, they just don't name Cizikas. I would say self defence goes a bit far, but there's a question of whether this was natural aggression that's part of a rugby game or it went beyond it. Some say it was after a whistle and clearly a cheap shot, and others say he was just finishing his play.

For a while, it sparked a whole controversy up here about whether rugby was too violent for high schools and if this was indeed the culture of the game.

Thanks, Beef, for the note about him being a minor. I haven't read enough into the law in that regard.

It is also probably why his name is not being used up here in connection to the incident, because he would be considered a young offender. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if you are a minor your and you commit a crime your record does not follow you to adulthood, thus making it possible for him to cross the border without much trouble.

Was this an actual high school rugby match or just a sandlot game?

He was a young offender at the time and could not be named in the media. My understanding is that young offenders are never "convicted" of a crime but found "guilty"

And this was a high school game.

No one's posted about tonight's big game, and the superstar matchup of Brooks Orpik and Dave Steckel? ;)

Steckel's still around? Crap. Was just watching the NHL Network special on the 2009 Pens-Caps series and had forgotten how many big plays that guy made. Was kinda hoping he had faded into Bolivian by now.
