Which is fine, but Gardner isn't replacing Damon. Johnson was. If Damon had come back, it was going to be at DH, with the occasional game in the outfield. The choice was Johnson or Damon. Gardner was going to be at least a semi-regular regardless.

Yeah, but Gardner is hitting 2nd now, which is where both Damon & Johnson batted.

With the way Cervelli is hitting and handling the pitching staff, they can use Posada at DH more or rotate A-Rod, Jeter, etc. through the DH spot.

As I said, they have enough offense to overcome it, but that doesn't mean they didn't screw up. They signed Johnson to replace Damon as their every-day DH and that was obviously a mistake. Damon is a better player and he can actually stay on the field.

Jim Hendry has absolutely no fucking clue how to evaluate bullpen talent.

He's actually shown some speed on the bases and in the field. He also has an outfield assist this year.

He's hitting .288 with 27 runs scored and something like 15 RBI this year.

What a comeback by the Yankees after coughing up a 5-0 first-inning lead. A-Rod with the game-tying homer in the ninth and Thames with the walk-off.

No. OOP. they signed Johnson to replace Matsui.
They traded for Granderson, unloaded Cabrera (who has been worse offensively than Vazquez has been on the mound), and plugged Gardner into Damon's spot -- after offering Damon more money than he is making in Detroit.

Go back and read again. Matsui was already gone. They were never in the bidding for him. He had already signed with the Angels.

They were negotiating with Damon and decided to go with Plan B, Johnson, to prove a point. And I don't think it was about being financially responsible, which is how they tried to paint it. They wanted to prove that they were the big, bad Yankees and they were going to get him at their price or not at all, so they went with Johnson instead to prove their point.

Not saying Damon and Boras were smart about it at all. Boras did a terrible job for his client on that one and Damon should have stepped in and been reasonable. But that said, it WAS Damon or Johnson and the Yankees made the wrong call.

They were willing to let Matsui go and signed Johnson as the cheaper alternative 4 days after Matsui signed with the Angels...in December

There was still an offer on the table to Damon into February, long after they signed Johnson...lower, take it or leave it. When Boras continued to insist on $10 mill, they signed Randy Winn and Marcus Thames as cheap back-up outfielders -- on Feb. 8 and Feb. 10 -- at a total cost less than their offer to Damon, who finally landed in Detroit on Feb. 22.

It never was Damon or Johnson.
