UH has a new AD and they have plans to renovate or replace Hofheinz (and the football stadium). My guess is he wants his own guy and wants to make a splash with the hire in order to kickstart fundraising.

After talking to a few people, a big problem they have with Penders is his recruiting style. Apprently, he's demonstrated an inability to effectively recruit the local talent. I heard a lot of complaints about an over reliance on juco players and transfers.

I checked their roster. The Coogs have six juco players and two transfers from other universities.

Which is pretty much what he has done at every stop.

As to Zags' question about best mid-major coaches, there are a bunch of them who have now settled in and don't seem likely to go anywhere: Dunphy at Temple, Martelli at St. Joe's, Morrill at Utah State, Altman at Creighton, Blaine Taylor at ODU, Bob Thomason at Pacific and very obviously Few at Gonzaga.

The guys who might be moving: Randy Bennett at Saint Mary's is high on any list; Jacobson at UNI and Marshall at Wichita State, though he's not been great there; Randy Rahe at Weber State and Wayne Tinkle at Montana; Chris Mooney at Richmond.

Will be interested to see how long Dan Monson hangs out at Long Beach State. Would seem to be a nice fit for him, until it's not.

Can we get over the idea that teams like Temple, St. Joe's Xavier, Wichita State and Gonzaga are "mid-majors." They are long established programs with national profiles, regardless of the fact that they don't play in football conferences. They are MAJOR basketball programs who don't play in BCS football conferences.

I would certainly keep Wichita State in the Mid-major pool, given facilities, conference, what they pay Marshall, etc. The rest are certainly not mid-major.

I never thought there was a question about Penders being able to win. It's always been about how he got the job done.

    Penders quit/resigned/took a bullet/whatever

He should retire. He's put in his 25 years. He might be an interesting color guy, actually, on C-USA games or something.

ECU is an excellent place to continue his streak of never having coached a team to the NCAAs.

Glad to see the UTC-ECU pipeline is still flowing.

    They are mid-majors.

The only three programs I can think of who aren't in the big 6 who can start to talk about shedding that label are Memphis (which, now that Cal is gone.....), Gonzaga and Xavier.

The rest are the definition of mid-major.

The problem a lot of people have is they are afraid to use the word low-major to differentiate between the Robert Morris's and the Temple's of the world.
