From what I have read Alford is the only big-name coach who has sounded even remotely interested.

Bubbler, I wished I could offer some better suggestions for dining! There are two new places in downtown Waterloo called Roux Orleans and Screaming Eagle, which could be a slight upgrade.

Or I should recommend you to drive 15 minutes north of Cedar Falls to Waverly and take in the Fainting Goat restaurant. An ex-wife of one of the Hooters founders runs the joint.

Any time I visit home, I have to grab a sub from Sub City on the west side of Waterloo. I can't stomach any other places!!!!

I will try them all because the alternative is Carlos O'Applebees or some such joint.

I heard a report that St. Johns is going to talk to Cornell guy.

He is an excellent coach but I'm wondering if he can (a) recruit the kind of players needed to win the Big East and (b) develop a system that will be effective without having five super intelligent kids who are all very skilled and can shoot from beyond the 3-point line/.

Supposedly Phil Knight wants Tubby Smith at oregon. I think the rest of the Pac-10 would be OK with that. Solid coach, but not a drop-dead outstanding hire.

Greenberg will stay at VT, per release just sent:

Greenberg agrees to terms to contract extension
Hokie coach to remain at Virginia Tech with new contract terms

    March 26, 2010

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech head men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg has agreed to terms for the remaining four years of his current contract, plus an additional two years that have been added to the contract, according to Director of Athletics Jim Weaver. Terms of the contract will be released within the next 10 days to two weeks, when all the appropriate contractual responsibilities have been finalized and signed.

"I am pleased that Coach Greenberg will continue his mission at Virginia Tech and will lead the Hokies for the next six seasons," Weaver said. "He has done an outstanding job in creating a program and environment that has the Hokies competitive year in and year out in the ACC. Under Coach Greenberg's tutelage, the Hokies have the fourth-best regular season record in the ACC and he has created one of the best programs in the country."

Greenberg has just completed his seventh season as the Hokies' head coach, compiling a record of 132-94 over that span. The Hokies have earned post-season berths in five of the seven seasons, including each of the last four years. Tech advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

This season, the Hokies finished with a record of 25-9 overall and 10-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tech finished tied for third in the ACC and earned its fourth first-round ACC Tournament bye in the school's six years in the league. The 25 victories ties the school record for most victories in a season.

"I am excited to be afforded the opportunity to continue to build the basketball program at Virginia Tech," Greenberg said. "What makes Virginia Tech so special is the people and their passion for the University. My family has embraced all that the University stands for and I feel this is where I belong."

    And St. John's expects . . . what? They're the East's DePaul. Lotsa luck.

Yeah, not a bad hire, by any means, but I don't think Ben Howland, Sean Miller, Herb Sendek or Mike Montgomery are going to sweat over Tubby.

I read that Al Skinner is talking to St. Johns.

Apparently the ACC thing isn't working out too well for BC and St. Johns has officially given up on trying to become a big-time basketball program again.

Al has one outstanding asset as a coach. He has an unbelievable ability to find high school players who are not sought after by many schools who grow into excellent college players. Troy Bell, Jared Dudley, it's a long list. For St. John's, that might be all they can hope for from a coach.
BC has held its own in the ACC (not this year), just as it did in the Big East. But losing each and every long-time rival is not good for any program. It was a football move only, because God forbid anything happen to those annual Emerald and Mieneke Car Care bowl invitations.

Tyrese Rice, too. A lot of people down here were surprised he didn't get more attention from schools in this region. A little short and his shot looked funky but he could play.
Skinner seems like a really good guy. Dealt with him at RI as well as BC, albeit on a very limited basis. So I could be way off there.

Al is a very good guy, at least in my experience. He's also got a very pro coach approach, which may explain why he's able to develop the overlooked guys he gets.
