It was being bandied about on Twitter last night. The Register and damn near everyone else is confirming it today. It appeared and sounded like McCaffery pushed for the Iowa job, since he coached at Notre Dame and his wife played for the Irish and is originally from Minnesota.

I wanted Brian Gregory on the outset, but when I heard McCaffery's name last night, I said if Barta could get him, lock him and bring him to Iowa City. This is a good hire and Fran's first job is to start selling the program to recruits and make the rounds with the myopian boosters and fans.

Oh, FWIW, word is that players and boosters are pissed off. They wanted B.J. Armstrong as coach. Sorry, no coaching experience = no chance in hell.

This is just plain sad. A Eugene TV station says a source told them that Oregon will offer to make Tom Izzo the highest paid coach in college basketball.

Knight has to realize that as long as his school's uniforms don't read UCLA or Arizona, it doesn't matter how much money he throws at a coach. It will be a second tier program.

Well that is true -- unless they actually could get Izzo -- then I think he'd put them on the map.

Did Ralph Williard get hired at Seton Hall?

Yes he did, Zag. Williard to be introduced tomorrow as Seton Hall's new man.

That's Kevin Willard, Ralph's 34-year-old son who had been at Iona. No formal announcemeent until a Wednesday presser.
A pretty weak hire by the Hall.

Meanwhile Seton is doing as little better with its women's program.. will be hiring Anne Donovan as coach this week.

Iowa has hit a home run with McCaffery. Just check the records of the two programs he inherited this decade. Look at them in the two (or three) years before his arrival and in the two or three immediately thereafter.

I will be stunned if Izzo leaves Michigan State for Oregon.

Oregon realizes they are a significant step down from Michigan State in terms of hoops right now, right?

  12. I'm told that the Iowa job will establish the Midwestern ties (read: he won't be just an "East Coach" coach) that he'll need to recruit when he replaces Brey at ND.
