The reason why Amare is considered such a crappy defensive player has nothing to do with blocked shots. It has to do with his inability or refusal to guard people. It has to do with the fact that the guy he's supposed to be guarding has a remarkable knack for getting wide open shots, drives or dunks while Amare stands out of position watching him. You know the stuff that his personal stats don't necessarily measure but make a HUGE difference?

Lee's not a great defender either, but if you don't think he expends more effort trying to guard his man than Amare, then you haven't been paying close enough attention.

I don't disagree that Stoudemire is a bad defensive player. But I'd have a hard time saying that Lee is "way" better, although admittedly I haven't seen the Knicks play as often as Phoenix just because the Knicks are rarely on TNT on Friday nights or ABC on Sundays, for obvious reasons.

Besides the fact that the Knicks managment is inept, what makes Stoudamire and the Knicks better than Lee and Knicks?

That was a very good Simmons column.

Can't the Knicks afford to keep Lee now?

Personally, I hope he goes to Chicago, which may make the most sense.

When I saw Phx play Toronto a couple of seasons ago I was actually shocked at how crappy Amare's D was. He made Rasho Nesterovich look like Tim Duncan.

You can see the blown assignments on TV but to see the disinterested shuffling and lack of any kind of pressure was astounding to see live.

You would think pride would force him to get better. But when you can get a max deal anyway, why put forth the effort to get better, right? Unless you're blessed with the MJ/Kobe competitive gene.

Because unless they have to renounce him to sign Lebron, Lee will bring back a player.
