A fellow Braves fan friend of mine claims it won't be long before Atlanta has the lowest payroll in the NL East ... and I think he might be right.

I'm skeptical of big money deals for closers, but this doesn't seem bad if it's the first of many steps. If this is instead of Reyes & one of the big 1Bs, Marlins fans should be very disappointed.

Is this not the slowest moving Hot Stove in recent memory?

I heard that most of the moves will be done during the winter meetings.

Yeah, I think Bell's on the decline. But he's certainly better than what Florida/Miami had last year.

Not as long as this guy is still owning a (semi) Major League team

Guy, I think the slowness of the Hot Stove season is due to the fact the biggest names on the free agent market are REALLY big names and are looking for deals to match. The more money on the table, the slower the decision making process -- unless you're Tom Hicks, I suppose.

There was also the issue of free agent compensation possibly changing in the new CBA, so that probably slowed teams' pursuit of free agents.

But with the new CBA in place now, things should start moving.

I'll just say that I look forward to seeing how people view that contract in two years.

Read somewhere that the yearly difference alone in taxes for Bell - FL vs CA is $1.2 million.

Can't believe someone hasn't mentioned this yet: Angels get rid of Mathis! And they actually got someone for him!:

Of course, it's a reliever who had a 9.82 ERA in his brief time in the bigs last year, but he is left-handed.

Seems like addition by subtraction, but now I get nervous anytime the Angels trade a catcher to Toronto. Sure bit 'em on the butt last time.

The Rangers have immediately called the Blue Jays about a trade

I kind of wonder what the hell the Blue Jays want with Jeff Mathis. They could use a back-up, but why not just get some guy making the league minimum? From the story, it sounds like they could not tender him a contract, but if that's the case, why give up anything for him? Because they were going to release Mills anyway, and if the Angels release him instead they pay out the small amount left on the contract?
