It's as standard a free agent gambit as there is for guys who have a team they'd rather go to or stay with for non-financial reasons. In fact, it's a junior high dance gambit. Dance with some other girl to make the one you like jealous.

Yeah, he's a No. 2 (or 3) starter in a market where there is no No. 1. Teams gotta spend they money on sumthin', I guess.

Agreed. It seems like the Marlins are more concerned with making a good show of spending money than they are with actually putting together the best team possible.

Plus, you know Guillen loves Buehrle from their White Sox days, so he probably pushed hard for him.

Buehrle will pitch well enough to win 15 games for the M's, but he does not pitch well enough anymore to win many playoff games.

Excellent point. Can't believe I didn't think of that. Proof that three days of minimal sleep from being sick is not improving my mental functions, which are limited enough on a good day.

I'm not real surprised that Buehrle got that much per year, but the number of years surprises me. For some reason, I thought he was looking for a one or two year deal, and then going to retire.

LAT: Angels, sensing they might lose Wilson to Marlins, aggressively pursuing Pujols.

Fox says Wilson is expected to sign with the Angels; Yahoo says Angels are "in strong" on Pujols.

My gut tells me Wilson signs with the Angels and Pujols stays in St. Louis, but this has been a fun couple of days.

I think that's how it ends up, too. Still not buying the Angels "aggressively pursuing" Pujols. I just don't see them making that kind of move, not with their history in free agency and the Wells albatross that Reagans stuck them with.

Agreed. The better move is to sign Wilson, not put the anchor over their neck for Pujols. They need a bat, but not a $220 million bat.

Wow - Bob Nightengale says the Angels' offer for Pujols is 10 years, at least $210 million.
