Oakland trades: Trevor Cahill to Arizona for a package including pitcher Jarrod Parker, widely considered the D-backs' top prospect:

Agreed. Good deal for Moore, great deal for the Rays, even better deal for baseball.

If his performance backs up his potential, he'll still get a chance to sign for really big money when he's eligible.

I like it for Oakland, since Cahill strikes me as more of a Zito or Mulder, helped out by that ballpark, than Tim Hudson, who's stuff plays anywhere.

So Oakland develops a few bright young pitchers and peddles at least one of them off for raw pitching talent that hasn't been developed.

People wonder why this organization is a joke now.

Anyone can choose to believe in this stuff or not, but I don't think it's real hard to explain Cahill's 2010 as a BABIP-inspired fluke, and predictably he fell back to his normal, innings-eating self in 2011. Expect more of the same in 2012.

I tend to agree with Herbert here. I fully understand Oakland's quandary, in that they know they have to get what they can for guys before they become too expensive.

But in the last half-decade or so, Beane has started getting rid of guys two or three years before has to. They could have held onto the likes of Swisher, Blanton, Haren and now Cahill, and maybe won a few more games before they inevitably dealt them away for prospects.

    A BAPIP-inspired fluke.

That stuff about getting too expensive is bullshit. Last year the A's took home $40 million from MLB's revenue-sharing plan. They are intentionally starving the franchise in hopes of making the Oakland situation as bleak as they can so they get approval to move.

    They are losing on purpose.

Nice. And I understand your point and often find myself agreeing on this stuff.

That said, BABIP works extremely well in predicting future performance. It's not 100 percent because sometimes pitchers do things that help them to keep a BABIP really low (think Brandon Webb in his prime with that nasty sinker forcing a ton of ground-ball outs), but plenty of people used it to correctly predict Cahill's decline in 2011.

Furcal back to St. Louis on a two-year deal:

    I'll restate it.

In 2010, Cahill had a great ERA, but he also gave up a lot of at 'em balls and had some nice defense behind him. I don't think he has the stuff to keep up those results, and 2011 showed it.

Moddy, have fun with Ryan Perry.

What can you tell me about Balester? I know he's 25 and hasn't spent a full season in the majors yet, but he's out of options. Perry has an option left, so he could spend time in AAA.

Edit to change name to Ryan Perry.
