I think I've mentioned this before, but on the online stat form our baseball league uses, there's a column for OPS.

    The boys are 8.

Why not? OPS is pretty easy to understand and compute. It's hardly exotic.

Have you ever seen what constitutes a "triple" among 8-year-olds?

I'm not so sure 8 year old boys need to have stats kept, but if they do, there is nothing wrong with OPS.

I agree. If anything, I think it would stress the importance for hitting for power and waiting for a good pitch to hit.

Apparently the Astros just acquired Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland from the Red Sox for Mark Melancon.

Well, when you can swap a potential starting shortstop and No. 4 starter for a dime-a-dozen reliever and a utility man, you gotta do that every time.

I see I was late with the Melancon/Lowrie/Weiland news.

    Oops

Really? Jed Lowrie can't stay healthy, and Kyle Weiland got the crap knocked out of him when he pitched as a starter. (I do think he eventually turns into a good bullpen arm.) Minute Maid Park isn't really going to help Weiland, and Lowrie is probably league average if he can actually stay healthy for a full year, so I considered it a pretty even trade. The Astros could get some upside, but both could be DFA within three years and it wouldn't surprise me. (See: Pirates acquire Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen.)

How you seen what constitutes a "single"?

If we were scoring honestly, every kid would hit .000 with a billion walks and ROEs.

Yu Darvish bidding ends in about 30 minutes.

I'm convinced he's going to be awesome. Bigger, stronger, younger and better than Matzusaka was when posted, and Matsuzaka was a pretty good MLB pitcher before he got hurt.

Nah, it's not that bad, but I see your point.

Just thought the idea of putting OPS at the youth level was a bit of overkill.
